Beavs' Poyer: 7th round to Philly, Chip Kelly

OREGON STATE cornerback Jordan Poyer will play for Chip Kelly. The Beaver consensus All-America selection was chosen with the 12th pick in the 7th round (218th overall) by the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday in the 2013 National Football League Draft.

It took a while longer than many expected. But Jordan Poyer was finally drafted on Saturday. And the former coach of the Ducks, new Philadelphia head man Chip Kelly, was the one who took him.

Poyer is the fourth Oregon State cornerback to be drafted in the last five years. He joins Brandon Hardin, who played corner at OSU but was taken as a safety last year (3rd round/Bears) and Keenan Lewis and Brandon Hughes, who were taken in 2009 (3rd/Steelers and 5th/Chargers respectively).

Poyer is the second former Beaver to be drafted this year joining Markus Wheaton, who also was a surprise to many in that he lasted into the third round. Wheaton is also heading to the state of Pennsylvania after being taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round on Friday.

Poyer is the first selection of a former Beaver by Philadelphia since Paul Carberry was taken in the 10th round of the 1987 draft. Poyer joins former OSU cornerback Brandon Hughes with the Eagles.

In 2012, Poyer became the first consensus All-America selection since John Didion in 1967. The Astoria, Ore. native was a semi-finalist for the Bednarik Award and Jim Thorpe Award and concluded the 2012 season by playing in the Senior Bowl.

A four-year letterman, he started 24 games and finished his career at OSU with 151 tackles including seven tackles-for-loss and three sacks. He added 13 interceptions, 23 pass break-ups, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Poyer is also a standout on special teams as a return man and on coverage units.

It is the 13th straight year that an Oregon State alum has been taken in the NFL Draft. Since 2001 Oregon State, Oregon, USC, Cal and ASU are the only Pac-12 teams with at least one NFL Draft selection. Recommended Stories
