Weinke was a 4th round draft pick of the Panthers in 2001, started all but one game in his rookie season and amassed 2,931 passing yards, second most in NFL history.
"Chris has handled every situation with the Panthers extremely well," Panthers coach John Fox said on Tuesday. "He has been a leader in the locker room and earned the respect of all who worked with him. We wish him the best and appreciate his unselfish efforts toward the success of our football team."
Weinke finishes his Panthers career with 3,800 yards passing, 14 touchdowns and 26 interceptions in his six seasons with the team.
According to several sources, the Panthers are planning to bring in former Raiders backup Marques Tuiasosopo tomorrow for a workout, and have shown considerable interest in several QB prospects that figure to be high picks in the upcoming draft.
