Posted Apr 30, 2006

The Panthers took a safety in round 4, Ohio State's Nate Salley.

TFY draft preview:

Full Name: Nate Salley School: Ohio State

Ht: 6-1.5
Wt: 216
40: 4.69
Year: 4Sr

Bio: Three-year starter and an All-Conference pick as a senior after 43/1/6. Junior numbers included a career-high 55 tackles.

Pos: Physical, run-defending safety who is best in the box. Strong at the point and brings ball carriers down on initial contact. Moves well laterally, works well with cornerbacks and is effective facing the action. Has a solid burst of closing speed and goes for the knockout blow.

Neg: Marginal ball skills in coverage. Usually a half-step late arriving on the scene. Does not play with a great sense of urgency.

Analysis: Better up the field in a straight line, Salley looks like a traditional strong safety best suited in a limited area.
