Each of the players left the stadium Monday carrying a cardboard box full of their personal belongings. Delhomme said it was an emotional day bidding his teammates goodbye, largely because he hadn't planned for it.

"I wasn't ready," he said. "I don't think you're ever ready, but I was not ready yet. I kind of wish we had been practicing this week. When you're practicing this week, who knows what will happen? I wasn't ready to leave just yet."

WR Steve Smith echoed Jake Delhomme's sentiments a day earlier, saying he'd love to see the team re-sign fellow wideout Muhsin Muhammad.

"Yeah, I'd like to see it just for future reference. Take care of a guy that who's been in the league for some time now, been on this team for a long time, especially in the years they weren't doing as well," Smith said. "And he stuck it out and did the things he needed to do, was very productive, and now we're doing pretty good.

"He's still here producing. As far as myself, I'm being selfish, I want him here. I want him here and Ricky (Proehl) and Keary (Colbert) and bring them all to the table, so you've got four quality receivers. I'm just looking at it from a selfish standpoint, not a business standpoint. As a friend and a player."

Smith, by the way, expects to be begin running within a month and said there's a chance he could be ready for the team's April minicamp.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "As I told our football team, we picked a bad day to have a bad game. But for the season, I thought they gave a tremendous effort. I'm proud of what they accomplished. I thanked every one of them for their efforts. We had a lot of guys step up and do well when lesser character guys may not have. I'm very proud of the way they fought back this season." -- Panthers head coach John Fox on the team's Week 17 loss to the New Orleans, which prevented Carolina from becoming the first team to start the season 1-7 and make the playoffs.
