Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney has always said that it is their intention to build from within and take care of their own.

The Carolina Panthers have extended the contract of WR Steve Smith for three more seasons, reports Eric Edholm of Pro Football Weekly. Complete financial terms are not currently available.

The deal means the Panthers would have Smith through the 2015 season, and includes an option for 2016 as well.

Smith was scheduled to make $7.75 million this season, however the deal is structured to give the Panthers, who are dancing dangerously close to the the salary cap, some financial relief immediately.
